After having decided to take an elective course in Jazz composition as part of my Masters program with then QC faculty member Jimmy Heath during my fall semester of 1994, I had enjoyed the experience so much that I took the class again! I began composing the “Jazz 2” composition as the final project assignment for my final spring semester of my graduate program in 1995.
The accompanying live recording also captured the first read-through, that is, the composition’s debut performance, without any prior rehearsals just as had happened during the prior semester. We really didn’t have the luxury of time to be rehearsing and perfecting “final projects,” however, I again was very impressed at how well the Jazz Master class was able to read their parts on sight!
This second Jazz composition is a bit more complex than the first one the prior semester and definitely much longer in duration. Once again, I excitedly took advantage of this opportunity to study Jazz composition in my final year.
