I decided to take an elective in Jazz composition as part of my Masters program with then QC faculty member Jimmy Heath. I began composing the “Jazz 1” composition as the final project assignment during the fall semester of my graduate program in 1994.  

The accompanying live recording captured the first read-through, that is, the debut performance without any prior rehearsals. I recall being impressed, while I conducted, at how well the Jazz Master class was able to read their parts on sight! 

I had spent so many years studying classical music that I excitedly took advantage of this opportunity during my final graduate year to study Jazz composition.
