I composed this piece with the intention of using several Christmas melodies as inspiration such as “Joy To The World,” “The First Noel,” “Hark, The Herald Angels Sing,” “We Three Kings Of Orient Are” and “O Tannenbaum,” however, these popular melodies are not actually heard literally in the composition since I didn’t purposefully compose any obvious reiterations of them. My intention was to write a simple String Orchestra piece appropriate for a December concert but, that didn’t necessarily obviously sound like it was meant for Christmas.
Also, my goal was to make it very easy and playable enough so that an elementary school could perform it very well. In order to achieve this goal, I got the idea to compose secondary parts for the less capable students during the composition process. The final sound is actually quite thick, full and rich since every String Orchestra member can actually play his or her part with great ease.
For instance, Violin 2 has a second version called Violin 2B; a much simpler version of Violin 2 comprised mostly of whole, half or quarter notes and so forth for Violin 3B, Viola B and Cello B. There was no need to arrange a Bass B part since the original Bass line was already very easy to perform.
